Learning Objectives:I CAN DETERMINE MAIN IDEA TO WRITE A SUMMARY FROM A CURRENT EVENT. Let's get started! Let's use Think Pair Share to first brainstorm on the topic of using main idea to summarize. 1. Think:~Think on your own about the questions below. Jot down some answers in a word document or on a piece of notebook paper if you need to organize your thoughts. You have 5 minutes. Questions: 1. What does the term "main idea" mean to you? 2. How do you determine the "main idea" when looking at a lot of information? 3. What makes up a good summary?2. Pair:~Pair up with the person sitting beside you (no moving required). Talk about each question with your partner. You have 3 minutes.3. Share:~Let's discuss as a class the responses you all came up with to these three questions. We will now learn about main idea and summarizing through this
as you watch the Power Point on the big screen. You now have the rest of class time to work on either your summary or story book (or both!). What you don't finish in class, you can complete for homework. Explanations and Options: Learning Objectives: The "I Can" statement identified for the student.
Background Information: The "Think, Pair, Share" activity.
Multiple Means of Representation: Power Point, Interactive Worksheet, Youtube Video, Text for Youtube Video.
Multiple Means of Expression: Two options to choose from (news article, Youtube video). Three options for expressing understanding (summary, story book, or both).
Options for all students:
The student with mild dyslexia can watch the Youtube video without reading the corresponding text. This student can also choose the story book option so that they can draw pictures to demonstrate that they understand the information, instead of writing it.
The immigrant student that works with the LEP specialist can work with his specialist through the Power Point and fill in the fill in the blank worksheet. The specialist can help the student fill in the blanks and compare those words to the words in his native language. The immigrant student can also choose to make the story book so he can draw to show understanding rather than write. The pictures that he draws can then be captioned or described using his native language.
The student who is severely hearing impaired can follow along via text with everything that is said (even the Youtube video).
The student in a wheelchair can participate fully; there are no physical components of this lesson.
The student that is gifted can work ahead during the Power Point and expand his/her mind by answering the "Think" questions. This student can also choose the project option of doing both the summary and the story book (since he/she finishes things in half the time compared to the other students).
